China has warned the United States that its dangerous provocations in the South China Sea can lead to 'a minor incident that sparks war'.

According to the statement issued by the Chinese Navy, Naval Commander Admiral Wu Shengli issued a warning to his US counterpart Admiral John Richardson during their video conference and stated that if such provocations continue then it could be a critical situation between the forces.

Hopefully such incidents can be avoided in future, the Guardian quoted him as saying.

The high-level talk between both nations was held after US Lassen guided-missile destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles near Man-Made Islands in South China on Tuesday.
