Country music fans are mourning the loss of a legend as Glen Campbell, who sold more than 45 million records during his career that spanned over 50 years and topped the country singles chart 12 times, has dies at the age of 81.

The singer, whose perfect blend of country and pop made for such hits as 'Gentle on My Mind,' 'Rhinestone Cowboy,' 'Wichita Lineman' and 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix,' was struggling with Alzheimer's disease for years.

A post on his personal website read, "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and legendary singer and guitarist, Glen Travis Campbell, at the age of 81, following his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease."

"In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Glen Campbell Memorial Fund at BrightFocus Foundation through the CareLiving.org donation page," it further read.

His wife Kim Campbell also shared a statement that read, "The family appreciates your prayers and respect for their privacy at this time."

Earlier this year, Glen, who sold more than the Beatles in 1968, released his final studio album titled 'Adios' that included a collection of mainly cover songs by Bob Dylan, Harry Nilsson and other artists.
