The Delhi Government has banned Uber Taxi Service from functioning in the national capital with effect from today after one of its drivers was accused of raping a 27-year-old woman last Friday.
Leaders of various political parties and social activists condemned this incident, calling for justice and better safety measures for women.
Earlier today, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh called the incident extremely unfortunate and shameful.
The Uber taxi service issued a fresh statement assuring its full co-operation to help the victim and her family in their recovery.
According to reports, the Uber Cab driver accused of raping a 27-year-old woman on Friday, had been convicted for a similar crime in 2011 and had spent over seven months in prison. However, he was later granted bail.
A case had reportedly been registered under Sections 376 ( rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Sarai Rohilla police station and the accused was arrested last evening at Mathura.
