Dhoni only Indian to make Forbes richest athletes list

Residents of Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni's hometown in Jharkhand rejoiced as the Indian skipper made it to the Forbes list of highest paid athletes in the world.

Dhoni is the lone Indian sportsperson to feature in the magazine's popular list. His ranking dropped to 23 from 22 this year.

Dhoni's total earnings stood at USD 31 million, including amount from salary and winnings at USD 4 million and USD 27 million from endorsements during the calendar year 2014-2015.

Residents in Ranchi city congratulated Dhoni on the feat and credited his hard work for his success over the years.

"If we see 10-12 years ago, Dhoni did not even own a scooter; he did not even own a bat and kit. But after struggling so much with his hard work he has made so much money today. He should be saluted because he has achieved everything with hard work," said Kawaljit Singh, a resident.

Some fans wished the cricketer started a cricket academy in the state to promote young talent.

"He has achieved what he wanted. Now for the people of Ranchi he should open a cricket academy and support the children for it," said a Vinod Chaudhary, a fan.

Dhoni retired from test cricket earlier this year and continues to lead the one day international (ODI) squad.
