England football team manager Roy Hodgson has tipped the Manchester United superstar Wayne Rooney to spearhead the national team as captain in the Euro Cup 2016.
Hudgson also feels that Rooney become the country's all-time record goal-scorer by qualifying for the European Champions, the report said.
According to the Daily Star, current England captain Steven Gerrard has widely hinted that he would retire from the nationals following this summer's World Cup and Hodgson said that he felt sure that when Gerrard takes off, Rooney is likely to be captain.
The report also added that Rooney, who just signed a new 300 thousand pound a-week deal and a half-year contract at Old Trafford, is set to becoming Manchester United's next skipper as Nemanda Vidic would quit the club.
Rooney has already captained his team twice, the first time at Wembley in October 2012 when Gerrard was suspended and Frank Lampard injured and next time in a 1-0 defeat to Brazil in 2009 when John Terry was unavailable.
Rooney, who has bagged 38 goals for England in 88 games, is reportedly 11 goals behind the country's top scorer, Sir Bobby Charlton.
Hodgson also said that he was happy for Rooney signing the new deal and as there were already players playing at 33, 34 and still going strong, then why not Rooney? Hodgson also wants Rooney to go for the international goals record, the report added.
However, Hodgson reportedly was not happy with the new 'week of football' for the Euro qualifiers, which would see England in a tight schedule playing two games each on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, with one match also scheduled for a Tuesday and one on a Thursday.
Meanwhile, Hodgson confirmed that he would bring in British cycling performance director Dave Brailsford in May to deliver a motivational talk ahead of the summer World Cup in Brazil.
