The first state-level traditional and hip-hop dance competition concluded recently at the Bhaigyachandra Open Air Theatre here.

The competition saw approximately 50 dancers from varying ethnic communities compete in two formats-solo traditional and hip-hop.

The winners were not only awarded cash prizes but also given an opportunity to act in Manipuri films.

Manipuri, the state's traditional dance form, is one of the six classical dance styles of the country; the others being Bharata-natyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, and Orissi.

Manipuri is believed to be a religious and spiritual embodiment of performance art, which usually has Radha and Krishna as central themes.

The dance form usually incorporates the characteristic symbols into it visual performance.
