Union Minister for State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh on Sunday inaugurated an Automatic Weather Observatory at 'Saanjhi Chhat', near Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu. This modern weather forecasting system has been set up by the Department of Earth Science in the wake of the devastating floods that hit Jammu and Kashmir recently.
The Automatic Weather Observatory will serve as an early warning system through constant monitoring of water levels of different rivers across the region.
Up till now, the state was depended only on the forecasts provided by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The forecasts of IMD are quite accurate and now coupled with the information provided by newly installed weather observatory, the agencies will be able to warn about adverse weather conditions in a better way.
