Senior advocate Abha Singh on Thursday deplored Karnataka Home Minister K. J. George's unwarranted comment blaming the media for projecting Bengaluru as 'a rape city', saying it was a ploy to cover up his inefficiency in checking crimes against young girls and women.
"Karnataka Government has been unable to control the increasing crimes against women in Karnataka. And to cover up for their inefficiency and unable to maintain law and order, Karnataka Home Minister K. J. George is making such a deplorable statement that media is showing rapes to increase their TRP," she told ANI here.
Highlighting the media's role that helped getting a strong law to check crimes like rape against women, Singh said: "In fact, it is only because of the excellent coverage by media of these issues against women that India has managed to get a strong law."
"Rather than appreciating the media, he is trying to condemn the media, because it is his inefficiency which is there for everyone to see, where a girl-two-year-old, eight-year-old-is being raped mercilessly in schools and they have been unable to maintain law and order in the state," she added.
Amid sharp criticism over increasing sexual assaults on minor girls in schools, the Karnataka Home Minister had earlier blamed the media for highlighting 'only such news' and projecting Bengaluru as 'a rape city' to increase TRP ratings.
"What has happened to the media is you want only such news, you are showing only such news to increase your TRP. Show good news, it will be good," he had said.
