Usman Khawaja and Joe Burns produced contrasting centuries as Australia made an imposing 345 for three at stumps on the opening day of the second Test against West Indies in front of a festive Melbourne Cricket Ground crowd on Saturday.

Put in to bat first, Australia continued to pile on misery for the wayward West Indies pace attack as Khawaja (144) and Burns (128) engineered a robust 258-run stand for the second wicket after the dismissal of opener David Warner (23), the Guardian reported.

Captain Steve Smith and Adam Voges will resume their innings on their unbeaten scores of 32 and 10 tomorrow.

Australia are leading 1-0 in the three-match series after winning the opener emphatically in Hobart.
