Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan has been transferred to Mizoram. This move comes after former Mizoram governor Kamla Beniwal was recently relieved of her duties due to allegations of corruption.
President Pranab Mukherjee announced today that Sankaranarayanan had been transferred to Mizoram for the remainder of his term.
However, reports say that Sankaranarayanan has said that he would no longer wish to be a Governor bearing the "disgrace of being transferred."
Reacting to the reports, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spokesperson Nawab Malik told ANI, "According to the Supreme Court, Governors cannot be removed before their term ends. However, ever since the BJP has come to power, it has been removing Governors who were appointed under the UPA government."
President Mukherjee also announced that Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohli, in addition to his own duties, will take over the duties of Sankaranarayanan till a new Governor is appointed for Maharashtra.
