My family has presented themselves for accountability: Sharif post JIT appearance

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday said that his family has presented themselves for accountability before the Supreme Court appointed Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the Panama case.

"Today is a milestone for the rule of law. My government and my family have presented them for accountability," Geo News quoted Nawaz Sharif, as saying after appearing for approximately three hours in front of the JIT team.

Sharif informed that he has told the JIT his point of view and all the documents related to his assets, which are already with the Supreme Court, have been provided to the JIT now.

He questioned that was there any other family that has given such robust accountability of three of its generations.

Sharif said his opponents have not levied charges of corruption against him but neither in the past nor in the present, have any charges of corruption been proved against him and his family.

He warned his opponents about the next general election saying that there will also be a larger JIT next year, comprising 200 million people, and they will decide who has worked for the betterment of the country.

Sharif expressed his confidence saying that he and his whole family will be successful in JIT and in the apex court.

Earlier, the prime minister reached the Federal Judicial Academy amid tight security and an extensive protocol.

Sharif was accompanied by his brother Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, elder son Hussain Nawaz, Shehbaz's son MNA Hamza Shehbaz, son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar, political secretary Asif Kirmani and principal secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad, among other officials.

He is the first sitting prime minister of Pakistan to be directly questioned by investigators.

According to the notice issued to the Prime Minister, Sharif has been called as a witness and not as an accused.
