Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, Tariq Anwar on Monday said that no one is above law, and if the Congress candidate from Varanasi, Ajay Rai, has violated the model code of conduct, then action should be taken by the Election Commission (EC).
"The law is equal for all. No one is above law. Therefore, the Election Commission must take action, and we hope that the poll body will take action. If Ajay Rai has violated the EC code, then action should be taken. The rules are the same for all," Anwar said.
The Election Commission asked for CCTV footage after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a complaint with the EC that Congress candidate Ajay Rai had worn the party symbol while casting his vote at a booth in Ramnagar today.
On April 30, in a similar way, the BJP's prime ministerial nominee, Narendra Modi, had addressed a press conference immediately after he cast his vote at a school in the Ranip area of Ahmedabad and had displayed a replica of BJP's symbol, the lotus, besides taking a selfie during the event.
This action of his drew severe consternation from the opposition and the Election Commission.
