Condemning the use of 'abusive' language by Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, leaders of the opposition parties on Tuesday called for the Fatehpur MP's resignation from the Union Cabinet.
Jyoti's remarks reportedly came during a rally in the national capital on Monday, where she urged voters to choose between candidates in the city's Shyam Nagar area.
Congress leader Ashwani Kumar termed the remarks a 'new low in Parliamentary history'.
"She has no right to remain in the council of Ministers. I believe that the words, which were used by a Minister of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, is a new low in Parliament history," he said.
"Her expressing regret will not suffice. Action must be taken against her and the Prime Minister must give an explanation in Parliament," he added.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) leader Yogendra Yadav said that there is obscenity, ignorance and trepidation in the minister's act.
"The issue is not that a politician has made such an obscene statement, the issue is that a Union minister has made such a statement," Yadav said.

Earlier today, after facing criticism in light of her remarks from various political parties, Jyoti stated that she did not mean to target any particular person or party but was targeting separatists.
"I did not take name of any particular individual, community or party. I was talking about separatist parties and leaders who think of dividing the country and who do not consider themselves to be a part of India," said Jyoti.
