Opposition walks out during Pak President's maiden address

Lawmakers from opposition parties walked out of the assembly during newly-elected Pakistan President Arif Alvi's maiden address.

The session began with a protest from opposition senators, which was overruled by Speaker of the National Assembly, Asad Qaiser, following which opposition lawmakers walked out as the president began his speech.

According to the Dawn, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led government claimed that it was assured by the main opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party that its members will not disrupt the proceedings.

Alvi, in his address, had said, "Today's address marks the beginning of the new parliamentary year. I am grateful to be elected to Pakistan's highest Constitutional office, and pray that I will be able to fulfill the responsibilities that have been given to me."

During his speech, Alvi addressed several issues including democracy, corruption, foreign relations, and the austerity drive.

"Governments are only successful when they cater to the needs of their people. The current government has set out to make a Naya Pakistan, it is this same slogan that led us to win the elections," Alvi said.

He further emphasised on the improvements required in the healthcare and educational sectors as well as women empowerment.

While addressing the parliament, Alvi assured the senators that Pakistan's relations with other countries during the Imran Khan-led government will be strengthened

Addressing the Kashmir issue, Alvi urged the Pakistan government to stop the "blame game" and continue to make efforts at every level.
