Strong plea not to demand the presence of neurosurgeons by the courts in the country and make them physically present to give their evidence was made at the National Conference of Neurotrauma Society of India here during the week end.

Speaking at the three day 23rd Annual National Conference of The Neurotrauma Society of India in Mussoorie, Dr. V S Mehta, a former head of neurosciences at the All India Institute of Medical Science and presently a Director at the Paras Hospital in Gurgaon, asked, "Is it really essential or can we do without appearing in the court. Does it really help in delivering timely justice?"

"Many patients, who require urgent medical attention, suffer when the neuro-surgeon is required to be present in the Court. On many occasions, the cases are postponed and the neuro surgeons are required to attend the court again. The patients have to wait at the hospitals," he added

Dr V. S. Mehta pointed out that according to NSI register there are total 1,150 surgeons in the country, where the total population is 1.27 billion. The cases are delayed because of shortage of judges in the country.

He rued the fact when the cases are postponed it results in the waste of a lot of time of the neurosurgeons. He suggested that neurosurgeons need not be forced to appear in courts when cases are heard.

He called upon neurosurgeons be allowed to give written affidavits like the forensic experts as the public will benefit from it and the judgements will come faster.
