Tennis sensation Sania Mirza has been recommended by the Sports Ministry for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.
Sports Minister Sarbanada Sonowal has recommended the Wimbledon doubles champion's name for the highest honour given for achievement in sports.
Sania won her career's first ever women's doubles Grand Slam title with Swiss partner Martina Hingis in June. She also became world number one before winning the Grass Court major.
Ajit Sharan, Secretary in the Sports Ministry in New Delhi, however, made it clear that the final decision rest with the Awards Committee.
It is reported that Sania is competing with squash player Deepika Pallikal and discus thrower Vikas Gowda for the prestigious award.
