Games and sports are an integral part of the life of the people in the northeast. Thousands of sports lovers had recently a gala time at the two-day long naga wrestling meet held in Kohima.
A crowd of over 20,000 gathered at the Khuochiezie local ground in Kohima to witness the 24th Naga wrestling meet. Altogether 54 wrestlers from the districts of Kohima, Phek and Peren competed in the events.
"Through wrestling our Naga boys and girls have been progressing in very excellent ways and we are extremely happy that through wrestling the unity and diversity of the tribes, individuals do progress a lot," said Neikhrolo Khalo, President, Nagaland Wrestling Association
The contest was held in different categories, including Naga Style wrestling and national freestyle in both the Junior and senior category.
Wrestling is popular among the Nagas and the indigenous Naga wrestling style is different from the national freestyle, as here one can win only when the opponent falls.
Atoto Kire of Phesama village emerged the winner in Naga Style wrestling and won a cash prize of 2 lakhs.
"Wrestling is not only an indigenous sports of the Naga people but it is the indigenous game for other communities within and outside the country," said Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio.
There is no dearth of sporting talent in the northeastern region.
Such events provide a platform to the local players to hone their skills, and prepare them for national level championships.
