Top American senators have urged the United States to provide arms and ammunition to Ukrainian forces fighting pro-Russian separatists along the eastern border of the country.

Head of the Foreign Relations Committee Robert Menendez said that Russian President Vladimir Putin must face consequences of his actions.

Senator John McCain has called Russia's activities an act of 'invasion', reported the BBC.

Russian President had earlier called for discussions on the matter of instability in eastern Ukraine.

McCain also said that Ukraine must be provided with all the weapons they need in order to make them capable of fighting.
