Toshiba Corporation, one of the world's leading suppliers of thermal power generation equipment, today announced that a consortium of Toshiba, IHI Corporation, Hyundai Engineering Co., Ltd. and Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd., has won an engineering, procurement and construction contract (EPC Contract) for a 2,000 MW ultra-super-critical coal-fired power generation project in Mukim Jimah in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia (Project).

The EPC Contract was signed with a special purpose company established by Mitsui and Co., Ltd. (Mitsui) and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), which is wholly owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated.

Under the EPC Contract, Toshiba will supply and install two units of 1,000 MW ultra-super-critical steam turbine and generators (STG) offering high level energy efficiency and the world's largest class of output, plus other main equipment, including plant control equipment, main transformers and the switch yard.

Toshiba will also play a role in the marine civil work.

Through an international competitive bidding process organized by the Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission of Malaysia), Mitsui and 1MDB were awarded the Project and the right to construct, own and operate the 2,000 MW ultra-super-critical coal-fired power plant, and to sell the electricity to Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's national power utility under a Power Purchase Agreement.

The first unit of the Project is expected to start commercial operation in 2018, and second in 2019.

Toshiba is a market leader in the construction of large scale power plants in Malaysia.

Going forward, Toshiba Group will look to reinforce its market presence by providing environmentally-conscious power plants with the world's highest power generation efficiency, achieved with its thermal power technologies including ultra-super-critical STGs and combined cycle power generation.
