At least one person has been killed and six were injured when an Amtrak train, carrying Republican lawmakers, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, collided with a garbage truck in Virginia.

The train was carrying House and Senate Republicans to a retreat in West Virginia when the crash occurred.

According to the Washington Post, none of the dozens of members of Congress aboard the train, or their accompanying family members and aides, were among the seriously injured.

"Today's incident was a terrible tragedy. We are grateful for the first responders who rushed to the scene and we pray for the victims and their families. May they all be in our thoughts right now," Ryan wrote in a Twitter post.

The Wisconsin Republican was on the train with his family, and all were unharmed.

The train "came into contact with a vehicle that was on the tracks at 11:20 a.m. in Crozet, Va. There are no reported injuries to passengers or crew members. Local law enforcement is investigating the incident and crews are inspecting equipment for damage," Amtrak, said in a statement.

Republican members of Congress on the train, which left Washington's Union Station, were on their way for a retreat at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The retreat starts Wednesday and is scheduled to end on Friday.
