The United Kingdom has rejected US President-elect Donald Trump's suggestion that Brexit leader Nigel Farage should be appointed as ambassador to the United States.
"Many people would like to see @Nigel_Farage represent Great Britain as their Ambassador to the United States. He would do a great job!" Trump tweeted Tuesday.
However, a spokesman for British Prime Minister Theresa May's office blocked the idea saying the position was filled, reports the CNN.
"There is no vacancy. We already have an excellent ambassador to the US," said the Downing Street spokesman.
It is unheard of in recent years for any US official to make such a suggestion to an ally.
Trump and Farage have praised each other for their shared ideas on border controls, protectionist trade policies and for upending the political establishments on both sides of the Atlantic.
Farage endorsed Trump at a rally in Mississippi in August and the latter made frequent references to Brexit throughout the campaign, saying it demonstrated the wish for change among voters frustrated with establishment politics.
Trump has been complimentary of Farage for spearheading the movement for Britain to leave the European Union.
Farage also had a meeting with Trump after he won the election, congratulating him three days after his election at Trump Tower in New York.
This courtesy call was described by one of aides of the President-elect as a "very productive" meeting.
