UN urges India-Pak to resolve differences peacefully

The United Nations has called on the Governments of India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and encouraged them to continue their effort to resolve their differences peacefully and through dialogue amid rising tensions between the two nuclear states.

Speaking at his daily press briefings, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon said that the body is following the situation with great concern over tensions across the Line of Control (LoC).

"Well, I had not seen the reports of the cancellation of the SAARC summit. We're obviously following this situation with great concern concerning the increase of tensions across the Line of Control," Dujarric said.

Dujarric maintained that he is aware of the ceasefire violations across the border between India and Pakistan.

"The UN Military Observer Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), is aware of the ceasefire violations and right now is liaising with the concerned authorities to obtain further information," he added.

After India confirmed their inability to participate in the 19th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit, scheduled to take place in November in Islamabad, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan have also pulled out of the meet.

The move was taken in wake of the September 18 cross-border attack on the Indian Army Brigade headquarters in Uri in which 19 Indian soldiers lost their lives.
