The UK's Ministry of Defence will be putting the imposing Winston Churchill's war office on Whitehall on the open market and are expecting it to sell for 100 million pounds, it has been announced.

The MoD made the announcement that the building will be put on the open market after staff move across the road to the ministry's main building next year, the Daily Express reported.

The building is most likely to be turned into a luxury hotel.

Philip Hammond, Defence Secretary, said that as a result of their work to make the MoD leaner, more professional and more efficient, they were able to concentrate defence officials in London in a single building and sell the Old War Office.

Hammond said that having defence civil servants under one roof may help save up to 8-million-pounds-a-year in ongoing costs.

The construction of the building began in 1902 and completed five years later.

The war office has more than 1,000 rooms and two-and-a-half miles of corridors.

The building was bombed eight times during the WWII, but escaped largely unscathed.
