England pacer Mark Wood has said that he may need to have an operation to cure a longstanding ankle problem, adding that the possible return of James Anderson may see him miss the last Ashes Test that begins at the Oval from tomorrow.
Wood, who replaced the side-strain victim Anderson for the fourth Test at Trent Bridge, said that he has been facing this ankle problem for long and now it might need some work to be done on it, the BBC reported.
He added it was evident that he was struggling in the second Test at Lord's, and therefore, he might have to have that operation done.
Wood, who had the match figures of 1-13 in the first innings and 3-69 in the second, insisted that Anderson was seemed fine in the nets and if the latter is fully fit, he would get the nod.
The arch rivals will lock horns in the fifth and final Ashes Test at Kennington Oval starting from Thursday.
