At least 11 people were killed and 20 injured on Wednesday in a suicide bomb attack at a Shiite mosque here, a police source said.

A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-vest around noon at the entrance of Ahlu al-Baiyt mosque, in Baghdad's al-Obeidi district, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The toll could rise further, the source said.

Iraq has been witnessing some of the worst violence in years. In 2014 alone, at least 12,282 civilians were killed and 23,126 injured, making it the deadliest year since the 2006-2007 sectarian violence, according to a recent United Nations report.
