The CBI special court's decision to discharge BJP president Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati case was not akin to a "clean chit", the Congress said Wednesday.
The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) "self-congratulatory pats" were misplaced, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told the media here.
"The charges were dropped for lack of enough evidence to move a higher court," he said.
"Only a higher court like the Supreme Court can give a clean chit to any suspect. This judgment (in case of Amit Shah) has come from a lower court in the judicial hierarchy. This marks the beginning of a multi-level judicial process," he said.
A special Central Bureau of Investigation court Tuesday dropped all charges against Shah, who was accused in the staged shootout case related to the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauserbi Sheikh, and witness Tulsiram Prajapati, in Gujarat. Shah was the home minister of the state then.
