The CBI has arrested a Garrison Engineer for accepting new currency notes worth Rs 25,000 as bribe on the pretext of releasing three pending bills of a private construction company worth Rs 26 lakh.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths held R.S. Verma, the assistant engineer (Western Command) Chandimandir -- a military cantonment area in Panchkula district in Haryana -- red handed while receiving the first bribery instalment from the complainant, CBI Spokesperson Devpreet Singh told IANS on Thursday.

"It was alleged in the complaint that three bills amounting to Rs 14 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 10 lakh for construction contract carried out at the Western Command Chandimandir by the private construction company were pending with the sub-division Garrison Engineer," Singh said.

"The bills were to be allegedly released by the engineer for which he demanded Rs 60,000 from the complainant. He was arrested while receiving the first instalment of Rs 25,000," he added.

Verma has been booked under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act following a complaint received from the partner of the private construction company.
