South African batsman Faf du Plessis has been fined 50 percent of his match fee by the International Cricket Council (ICC) Saturday over a ball tampering incident that took place on the third day of the second Test against Pakistan here.
The World No.1 Test side had already been penalised five runs with the onfield umpires -- Rod Tucker of Australia and England's Ian Gould -- ordering a change of ball Friday.
The South African opening batsman was also summoned by match referee David Boon of Australia.
"Du Plessis is fined 50 percent of his match fee after breaching (the) ICC code of conduct on Friday," the ICC said Saturday.
The 29-year-old is the first South African to be charged with ball tampering.
The incident took place in the 31st over of Pakistan's second innings Friday afternoon when du Plessis - South Africa's Twenty20 captain - was seen on television rubbing the ball near the zipper of his trouser pocket, the ICC said.
