A day after transporters in the state called off their strike, the Haryana government made it clear Thursday that no new transport vehicle will be registered if it is not compliant with the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) 1989 within one year.
"Such vehicles, as are on the roads, have been given one year to go right-size and conform to the prescribed standards," a state government spokesman said here.
"Automobile industry manufacturers of four wheeler and two wheeler vehicles - which hires 25,000 vehicles (annually)- have decided not to hire in future those vehicles to transport their produce which do not comply with CMVR 1989," the spokesman said.
He said that the existing vehicles, mostly heavy vehicles and long-body trailers, have been given extension of one year to comply with the rules on size and dimensions.
"It was decided to give the transport vehicles one-time extension for one year, that too on a surety bond of Rs.2 lakh each. If they fail to conform to the standards after one year, the security will be forfeited," the spokesman said.
He said that the extension was granted so that truckers could get the heavy vehicles adjusted to right dimensions since the number of over-sized vehicles runs into thousands.
The Haryana government said automobile manufacturers like Hero Motocorp, Maruti Suzuki, Honda Motors, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), transport associations and the All India Motor Transport Congress have agreed to the one year deadline to transporters to comply with the rules.
"The representatives of automobile manufacturers requested for one year time to make their vehicles CMVR 1989 complaint. The representatives of Hero MotorCorp stated that about 4,000 of the approximate 4,800 transport vehicles used by them were registered in Haryana and these would need about two years to comply with the CMVR 1989," the spokesman said.
The transporters had gone on strike Jan 6 seeking withdrawal of the transport department notification on over-sized vehicles.
