Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani on Friday conducted a surprise inspection of the hostels at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
Irani, who was on the campus to inaugurate 'Unnat Bharat Abhiyan' Cell, announced that she will visit Kailash and Shivalik hostels after addressing the students and teachers at the newly constructed lecture hall.
The minister later visited the girls hostel (Kailash) and boys hostel (Shivalik) on the campus, accompanied by IIT-Delhi director V. Ramgopal Rao.
She spoke to some students about hostel facilities and mess arrangements. Several students complained of lack of water coolers and poor food quality in the hostels.
The minister inspected various hostel areas such as television room, eating area and kitchens.
Puneet Kumar, a first-year civil engineering student, said: "The hostel accommodates 350 boys. There is only one water cooler in the entire hostel and no desert coolers or air conditioners."
The minister assured the students that hostel facilities will be improved.
