The BJP-Shiv Sena and its allies were on the verge of making a clean sweep of more than 40 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, as per vote counting trends.

Barring Nanded and Satara, the alliance partners were leading with medium to huge margins in at least four other seats.

In a consolation of sorts, the Congress's former chief minister Ashok Chavan was the sole party candidate leading in Nanded and NCP's Chhatrapati Udayanraje Bhosale was leading in Satara.

In the earlier rounds, NCP's Supriya Sule-Pawar was leading in Baramati, but later was trailing by a few thousand votes as counting progressed.

Top leaders, union ministers and veterans from the Congress-NCP were biting the dust all over the state to new and senior rivals from the BJP-SS and its smaller allies across Konkan, Western, Northern Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha regions.

All the six seats in the country's commercial capital Mumbai were within reach of the BJP-SS alliance.
