Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tributes to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, assassinated on this day in 1991 by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber.

"Paying tributes to Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary," Modi tweeted.

Gandhi was blown up at Sriperumbudur near Chennai at an election meeting by a woman suicide bomber of the now vanquished Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

He served as the prime minister from October 31, 1984 to December 2, 1989.
