Musician Niladri Kumar, also the inventor of Zitar (electric sitar), believes that sitars are like wands described in the popular Hollywood film series "Harry Potter".
Having announced his 2015-2016 National Tour, supported by Mangal Entertainment in association with MiH Creation, Kumar shared that a sitarist and the instrument have to mutually choose each other.
"To sustain causes, we need support. That's the way this circle goes. Sitars are like wands described in 'Harry Potter'. They have to mutually choose, work and become a part of you. Only once you live with it long enough, the musical spell starts growing and then some magic begins to happen," Kumar said in a statement.
The musician said that the sitar, which he will be playing during the tour, is 100-years-old and has been with him since he was 7. He will be auctioning the antique sitar for 'Stay UPRooted' in its Mumbai edition, which is celebrating the International Year Of The Girl Child.
Kumar in association with the NGO Vision Rescue (through its Social Group 'ExploreYou') and music director Arjun Nair has taken up a 30-day challenge to musically empower a group of 12 girls who have showcased aptitude for music, from the Vasai Orphanage in Mumbai.
"This sitar has been with me for the most important period of my life, since I was 7 years old. It's a 100-year-old sitar. The age of the wood makes her sound sing, and it is difficult to part ways with her but I sincerely hope many more musicians are born by saying bye to her. I will be playing this sitar for one last time on the 30th," he said.
The debut showcase will be held in Mumbai at Shanmukhanda Hall on October 30, followed by the other metro cities next year.
