Chinese sprinter Su Bingtian's record-setting performance in the men's 100-metre dash was expected, said his coach Yuan Guoqiang here on Tuesday.

The Chinese clocked 9.99 seconds at the Diamond League Eugene on Saturday to become the first Asian-born sprinter to beat the 10.00-second mark, reports Xinhua.

"Su's result did not come all of a sudden," said Yuan.

"We had expected the time before the competition."

"Su has been improving since 2010. He ran into 10.30 in 2012, came in 10.20 in 2013 and timed around 10.15 in 2014. It was accumulative," he said.

"He went through a period of fatigue after the Asian Games last year, but he rebounded after making adjustment from February to April."

Su will skip the 100 metre race and concentrate on the 4x100m relay at the Asian Athletics Championships in Wuhan, which will kick off on Wednesday.

Both Su and the coach asked for more time and space to concentrate on their training.

"I hope everything can be as same as before," said Su, who attracted public attention after making the good result.

"I don't want to be disturbed."

Yuan also said Su needs more time on training.

"He need to improve his stride length and frequency," Yuan said.
