A total of 663 survivors of the Garissa attack left the town on Saturday for their their respective homes.
The survivors, including 50 school staff members, took 13 buses from Garissa military camp where they stayed two days as colleagues and community members came in large number to see them off, Xinhua news-agency reported.
A sombre mood engulfed the camp as many students broke into uncontrollably tears when the buses roared out of the camp. Other residents lined on the streets wishing them good luck in their future endeavors.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday declared that the country will have three days of national mourning.
At least 148 people were killed in the deadly attack on Kenya's Garissa University on Thursday, when Somalia-based militant group Al-Shabaab stormed into the university campus.
Five suspects people have been arrested so far, Kenya's cabinet secretary for the interior Joseph Nkaissery confirmed on Saturday.
