The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) cadres of targeting "Hindus" who are BJP supporters in West Bengal.

Speaking in the context of communal violence in Dhulagarh in Howrah district, BJP spokesman Sidharth Nath Singh said that Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was afraid of the "rising graph of BJP" in the state and that the "minority wing of the BJP" was targeting Hindus in districts "where the BJP's support base is expanding".

"The TMC wants to frighten the BJP supporters....the Chief Minister is indulging in minority appeasement," Singh said.

The BJP spokesman said that his party would send a delegation to Howrah to look into the incident of communal violence and the local BJP unit has been asked to move the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over the issue.

Taking a dig at Banerjee, Singh said that the reason behind her bitter opposition to demonetisation was "the black money accumulated through Saradha and Narada scams that turned into ash" post demonetisation on November 8.

"The SP, BSP and TMC are saying that poor farmers in their states are suffering due to demonetisation. If farmers are poor, where did Rs 22,000 crore come from in Jan Dhan accounts in Uttar Pradesh and Bengal?" Singh asked.
