The defence ministry's decision to clear projects worth Rs 80,000 crore is a giant stride forward towards addressing India's defence needs. The move to build six submarines indigenously should come as a shot in the arm for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" campaign. The Indian Navy's depleting underwater capability has been a major cause for concern, especially after the fatal accident on the INS Sindhurakshak in August 2013. The Defence Acquisition Council's move to clear the army's proposal and buy the Israeli Spike anti-tank missile in preference to the US Javelin anti-tank missile will give the army more teeth in land combat.
