Wipro continues to lead in sustainability disclosures

Wipro has been ranked 1st in the 2010 Asian Sustainability Rating (ASRTM) of Indian companies and 6th among Asian companies

Wipro has been included in the NASDAQ 100 Global Sustainability Index

Wipro Limited has been included in the NASDAQ 100 Global Sustainability Index of the 100 global sustainability leaders from across industry sectors. The NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc. and CRD Analytics recently announced the results of the semi-annual re-ranking of the NASDAQ OMX CRD Global Sustainability Index (Nasdaq:QCRD).

The NASDAQ OMX CRD Global Sustainability Index is an equally weighted equity index that serves as a benchmark for stocks of companies that are taking a leadership role in sustainability performance reporting and are traded on a major US stock exchange. The Index is made up of companies that have taken a leadership role in disclosing their carbon footprint, energy usage, water consumption, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, employee safety, workforce diversity, management composition and community investing. These are companies that are voluntarily disclosing their current environmental, social and governance risks as well as their revenue opportunities and how they may affect future performance. The Index is evaluated on a semi-annual basis in May and November.

Wipro Limited is also ranked first among Indian companies in the 2010 Asian Sustainability Rating (ASRTM). Released in September, the ASRTM 2010 analyses the publicly available information of the 542 largest listed companies in 10 Asian countries. The rating provides companies, investors and other stakeholders a view of the strategic sustainability of these companies.

Wipro had the following results from the 2010 ASR™ - sustainability disclosures have an overall score of 83% and ranked 6th in Asia and 1st in India.

The ASRTM is an Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) benchmarking tool developed by CSR Asia and Responsible Research. The ASRTM methodology is based on a set of 90 proprietary sustainability indicators, split into four categories: General, Environment, Social and Governance.  These indicators apply to all companies irrespective of their sector.  In order to keep the end results as unbiased as possible, companies are scored based on publicly available information only.

Wipro’s sustainability journey began five years ago with the belief that organizations do not function in a vacuum. Actions and decisions of organizations impact not just its employees, investors and customers, but also the universe of all ecosystem stakeholders. Several initiatives over the past years have demonstrated the company’s commitment towards sustainability – be it  incubation of eco-energy and water businesses two years ago, product responsibility demonstrated through the award winning green computing business (Ranked 1st in Greenpeace Green Electronics Rating)   and clear and ambitious targets to reduce our operations resource  footprints (energy/water/waste).

Wipro is ranked 2nd in the World in the IT Services sector on multiple dimensions of corporate sustainability by Oekom Research AG.  Wipro is part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for 2010, one of just three companies from India, who made the cut in the list of 318 companies worldwide who are part of the Index.

Key performance highlights of Wipro’s Sustainability Report 2010-11:

The energy efficiency of Wipro’s campus operations has shown an improvement of 20% over the last 6 years.

16 of Wipro’s campuses are LEED (green building design) certified. Energy efficiency initiatives have helped save 15 Mn units of electricity last year alone.

On an average, Wipro’s campuses recycle 32% of our freshwater consumption and have set a goal to improve water efficiency by 5% every year.

76% of campus waste gets recycled through partners and by 2013, no more than 5% will end up in landfills.

Workforce diversity is a strong inclusion in this year’s report – women comprise 29% of Wipro’s workforce, which is made up by people from 70 nationalities.
