The 100 MW gas-based Monarchak power plant in West Tripura district, about 50 km from here, started generation, a project official said today.
"Now we are generating in the Monarchak Project on a trial basis and hope that within seven days commercial generation will start," Asit Chowdhury, coordinator of the project said.
The project was run by the North East Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO), a government undertaking. The Tripura unit of ONGC is supplying gas for the project.
Chowdhury said the 84 MW gas-based thermal power project at Ramchandraghat in Khowai district was converted into a combine cycle project and an additional 26 MW was now being commercially generated.
An additional 5 MW Solar Power was being commercially produced from the Monarchak since February 15 as a green project, he said.
With this, Tripura is now a power surplus state, which produces 726 MW from the gas-based thermal power project at Palatana, in Gomati district, about 60 km from here and provide power to all the North Eastern states.
Another 100 MW would be given to Bangladesh from Palatana for which transmission lines were being drawn up by both the countries.
Earlier, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide 100 MW to Bangladesh from the share of Tripura, citing that without the help of that country, the project would not have been possible as they allowed their water and roadways for carrying the over-dimensional machines for the project.
