13 per cent rise in health research budget in FY 2016-17: Govt

There has been a jump of nearly 13 per cent in the budgetary allocation for health research in the current financial year, the government said today.
"The total budget allocated for the department of health and family welfare for the financial year 2016-17 is Rs 40,657. 57 crore while Rs 1,144.80 crore has been allocated to the department of health research.
"This is 12.44 per cent increase allocation over the financial year 2015-16," Minister of State for Health Shripad Naik said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
The budgetary allocation for health research stood at Rs 1,018.17 crore in 2015-16.
Naik said a separate research budget is earmarked for other scientific organisations, including department of science and technology, department of Bio-Technology and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICMR).
In addition to the research projects of ICMR, Department of Health Research has initiated five new developmental schemes to promote medical research in the country, he said.
These include Multi-Disciplinary Research Units (MRUs), Model Rural Health Research Units (MRHRUs), Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDLs), Human Resource Development (HRD) and Grant-in-Aid scheme (GIA), he added.
