While interacting with the young IPS officers led by G Srinivasa Rao, Patil asked their views regarding reforms in the police.
After getting different replies from the officers, Patil said to bring reforms in the police, there is a need to increase the number of police stations and personnel in the country.
At present there are only 1,400 police stations in India with each covering 100 villages.
He said provision of strong rooms and (koth) a room for keeping weapons is also required in these establishments.
The job of the police is more difficult than that of the defence forces and their responsibility has increased manifold in current times, Patil said.
"A strong and credible police force is a necessity to safeguard public interest and for the common good of the people. It is, therefore, imperative that we improve policing standards by upgrading the professional skills of the police force, with a focus on enforcement of rule of law and winning the trust and confidence of the people," he said.
Shivani Tewari, a woman IPS officer part of the delegation, thanked the Punjab Governor for giving valuable tips on police reforms.
