"The consecutive life imprisonment means that the three main accused would be serving two life terms for two murders. Once life term of one murder ends, the second one would start. It is approximately 40 years in jail for each of the three," said prosecution advocate Harpreet Sandhu.
The three main accused Umesh Kadra, Pritpal Singh and Harvinder Singh were convicted under section 302 (murder) on Wednesday by Additional Sessions Judge Priya Sood for murdering the then serving Moga DSP Balraj Singh Gill and a woman Monica Kapila.
The main accused's accomplices Hassanjit Singh and Ravinder Singh were convicted for conspiracy and forgery were sentenced to imprisonment for seven years while another accomplice Davinder Singh was given five years'imprisonment.
The DSP and Monica Kapila were found brutally murdered at an isolated farmhouse on Hambran road in Ludhiana in February 2012.
The throat of DSP was found slit and his head smashed with iron rods. The Ludhiana police cracked the case two months after in April 2012 with the arrest of six accused who claimed that they murdered the DSP and his friend with the motive of burglary. Police also claimed that the accused were not aware of Gill's identity of being a DSP in Moga police.
