"As many as 52 inmates who were taken to the court were being brought back when four of them broke open the roof of the van to escape near Mahila thana," Additional Superintendent of Police, Ram Kishun said.
The police van and SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) teams accompanying it however acted promptly and nabbed them a little distance away and they were sent back to jail, he said.
An inquiry has been ordered and action will be taken on its basis soon, he said.
