Suresh was checking tickets in the reserved compartment of Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Express when he noticed a man travelling on a general ticket as the train reached suburban Ettimadai Station,around 1.30 am, police said.
When Suresh asked the man to either pay the difference in the fare or travel in the general compartment, he suddenly whipped out a knife and inflicted injuries on the examiner's hand.
Police said the injuries were not serious.
Some passengers overpowered the man, identified as Sudhakaran hailing from Thiruvananthapuram.
