Anti-corruption court convicts Jammu university official

An anti-corruption court today convicted a Jammu university official for cheating and sentenced him to three years imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs 32,000.
Special Judge Sanjeev Gupta ordered that Ram Kangotra, the then head assistant in professional evaluation engineering section, would undergo simple imprisonment of three years for cheating--one year for using as genuine a forged document and two years under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 32,000 on Kangotra, who in the case of default would have to further undergo a simple imprisonment of six months.
The judge said the sentences would run concurrently, a spokesman of the State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) said.

He said an FIR was lodged in 2006 following a communication from the university registrar alleging that there were variations in the marks awarded to students appearing in engineering examination held in February 2005.
According to an inquiry, it was found that documents were tampered with and were not in conformity with the marks mentioned in the evaluated scripts. The marks of some students were found to be enhanced, the spokesman said.
He said according to the contents of the communication some officials of Jammu university abuse their official position to confer undue benefit on some students.
Accordingly a case was registered and investigation in the matter was conducted, the spokesman said, adding a charge-sheet was filed in 2009.
