The incident took place yesterday when ASI Sanjiv Kumar, posted with Anti-Narcotic Wing of Punjab police, tried to nab the alleged smuggler identified as Sunny Doda, they said.
Doda had come to Shimla puri at Gill Road in Ludhiana to deliver heroin, police said.
A three-member police team, led by the ASI, was waiting to nab the smuggler, Punjab Police Anti-Narcotic wing (Ludhiana) Inspector Surinderpal Singh said.
When Doda stopped for the delivery of 'Chitta', he suspected the presence of cops. As he tried to ran away, the ASI jumped on his car to crush the windscreen to prevent the smuggler from fleeing, he said.
Kumar was dragged on the bonnet of the car for about 200 metres. He fell down on the road when the viper of the car broke down, Singh said.
The Inspector said Kumar sustained minor injuries on his arm.
He praised the ASI for the brave act.
The whole incident was captured on a CCTV installed in the market.
The police had information that Doda would come to deliver heroin on a two-wheeler. But he came in the car, Singh said.
"We will soon arrest him," Singh said.
The Punjab police has launched a crackdown against the drug smugglers as the state government vowed to wipe out drug menace from the state.
