On November 1, 2006, during a dispute over flood relief distribution at Akkaraipettai fishing hamlet in the district, a clash erupted between a man and leaders of the village fishermen panchayat.
Police had registered cases against 28 persons belonging to the two groups, including Jayapaul. He was charged with attempt to murder. The case was being tried in Nagapattinam sessions court.
Both the parties later agreed to withdraw the case and made a submission in this regard on April 25, 2014, following which Nagapattinam Sessions Judge Rani dismissed the case today.
