Audi mishap: Owner says he was in car at time of accident

Neurosurgeon Manish Rawat has told the police that he was in the car which was allegedly being driven by his driver who is suspected to have posed as some other person to get bail after the mishap which claimed four lives.
Rawat, who had moved an application for the release of his Audi Q7 car, did not turn up today before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Rawat's counsel Nazaqat Ali said.
Ishaq Ahmed, who had claimed that the driver had assumed his identity and misused his driving licence after the mishap, also did not appear to record his statement, police said.

After receiving police notice under section 160 of the CrPC, Rawat had recorded his statement before Indirapuram police.
He said before the investigating officer that he was not on the driving seat on January 27 and the car was being driven by his driver when it collided with a three-wheeler in his bid to overtake another vehicle near Indirapuram's Gaur Green round.
Rawat stated that after the collision passers-by started assembling near the accident site. He and the driver also sustained minor injuries.
Both of them somehow came outside the car and escaped from the spot fearing public outrage. Rawat claimed he employed the driver, who had allegedly posed as Ishaq, after verifying his whereabouts from a driving license issued by RTO Bareilly.

A police team has been dispatched to Bareilly to trace the alleged impostor who was released on bail by the CJM court, said SHO Indirapuram Pradeep Tripathi.
