A bill for setting up an institute of national importance under the Ministry of Steel, on the pattern of IITs, is likely to be introduced in the current session of Parliament when it resumes later this month.
"The government has already identified Biju Patnaik National Steel Institute (BPNSI) in Odisha, which the Ministry of Steel will be upgrading to the level of IITs as an institute of national importance. A bill in this regard is likely to be introduced later this month in Parliament," a steel ministry official told PTI.
The institute will offer graduate, post graduate, doctoral and research programmes with a maximum strength of 5,400, as per the proposal.
The official said the expert committee report on the subject has already been received, and on the basis of that, the HRD ministry has given a go ahead for the institute spread across 500 acres of land.
The institute will have a campus in Bhubaneshwar and will be set up with an initial corpus of Rs 300 crore which will be contributed by Government of Odisha and the Union Ministry, people privy to the information said.
The institute will also have satellite campuses in neighbouring states like West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chattisgarh.
In July 2014, the ministry had constituted a committee, headed by former Chairman of Chhattisgarh State Planning Commission Sunil Kumar, which recommended an institute of national importance under the Ministry of Steel.
Earlier, Steel Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had said, "The suggestions made by the Committee are holistic and necessary to provide a pool of knowledge and skill for achieving 300 million tonnes of production by 2025."
Currently India has 73 institutes of national importance including IITs, IIMs, NITs and AIIMS.
