The "Ghostbusters" star was unwinding at the Vesuvio rooftop lounge in Carmel, California when he spotted two starstruck fans trying to snap photos of the actor.
According to venue owner Scott Rose, Murray, who had not been drinking, allegedly approached the fellow patrons, grabbed their cell phones, and threw them off the second storey building, reported Daily Mirror.
Police were called to the scene, but the 65-year-old star had left by the time they arrived.
The officers opened an investigation into the incident and spoke to Murray, when the funnyman offered to pay for replacement phones.
Murray, who is currently in Carmel to take part in the annual Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament - a charity event he has become a regular at in recent years, has yet to comment.
Other celebrities playing in the golf competition include Justin Timberlake and ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.
Meanwhile, Murray's run-in with the over-eager fans has prompted owner Rose to change his phone policy at Vesuvio, banning the use of mobiles and photos at the celebrity hotspot.
